Meet Elaine, the artist with Nine Lives |
I am an experimental artist; I create based on what moves me at a moment in time.
How I actually create that work depends on what it is that has inspired me Some days I find myself reaching for a camera, on others for brushes and oils Sometimes perspex, metal paints, print materials or or my sewing machine!
I believe that it is important to stay true to who we are, and for that reason I MUST create! I only improve with practice, and my family acknowledges that I am a far better mum and wife when I am keeping the creative fires burning! There is a song I love, and besides the melody, the following words stay hooked in my mind:"...only the curious have something to find...''(song by Nicklecreek) Keep playing! That's what I say to everyone I have the privilege of influencing creatively. Keep playing, and stay curious, experiment....and since that brings me full circle I will stop there before I risk repeating myself (again!)
Elaine grew up in the remote Northern Cape town of Kimberley. Discovering an early passion for art (her first work was an etching of Alice in Wonderland when she was just 10), Elaine started studying at the Northern Cape Art Centre instead of doing art at school. Heading overseas when she was twenty, Elaine studied further at the Chelsea College of Art in the UK, then went on to Wimbledon College of Art (part of the London Institute of Art) to study fine art. From sculpture to print-making, Elaine is a well-rounded artist who swaps between media with ease and enjoyment.
Elaine is inspired by the world around her, as she says, she creates based on what moves her at that moment in time, she loves STOP signs and number plates, and marvels at the contrast of nature’s colours and patterns made by shapes in buildings and pavement bricks! She is inspired by people’s stories and views of the world, and she herself, breathes life expression when she can have the momentum of dance. |
Her multi-media work includes beautifully detailed word art, emotive abstract pieces, humorous cows, desert houses on canvas, dreamlike landscapes and swallow signatures!
Her home studio is where she creates commissions and hand-crafted functional art like dance shoe bags and Christmas gifts and continues to explore her ideas and themes in projects that are always on the go. Her house is full of small boys, art and life.

Salsa is more than a dance...it is something that gets into your blood! becomes a part of your thinking....as you stand in a queue in a shop...it is 123.567.....you know you are a dancer when '.' is a number!! the most beautiful people dance. and there is something so gentle about being a dancer, considerate, being an advanced dancer, and able to dance kindly with a beginner, remember we were all beginners once upon a time :) the shoes we wear, we take pride in them, they get maintained and loved and we choose them carefully, more so than the shoes we wear on a day to day basis! so when these shoes carry us all over dance floors, we should care for them....
